June 18 2024 - The Wedding Dress Runway

I did not get the wedding dress of my dreams.  I wanted a Victorian style wedding dress with the high collar, large sleeves at the top narrowing to the wrists, and a narrow waist with a bodice of lace. My mother had other plans based on price and convenience.  There was no "Say Yes to the Dress" sort of event back then.  I got to thinking of this because this is the wedding season.  The wedding dress is the highlight.

Our world of celebrities - whether born into Royalty or akchieved through endeavours - gives us a view of how far things can go.  THE WEDDING DRESS - all caps.  And why is that?  These are dresses of significant cost and astonishing designs.

Let's go down Fantasy Lane and see some of the greatest wedding dresses of all time.   There seems to be a mix of American celebrities and British Royalty in the line-up.  Most of the line-ups are based on spending a lot of money.  In the age of Billionaires on Beserk, these dresses are something to witness.

It is a long line-up of dresses - I have scrolled down to 59 and am now weary of white, so I'm going to share the link HERE.   No one will commit to the greatest wedding dress of all time.

Do you want to find out about the most expensive?

  • Angelababy Wedding Dress – $31 Million - worn by Chinese actress, singer and model
  • The Diamond Wedding Dress – $12 Million - I guess it is for sale? No wearer
  • Yumi Katsura's White Gold Dress – $8.5 Million - Japanese fashion designer creation - no wearer
  • Serena Williams: $3.5 Million - tennis star
  • Victoria Swarovski: $1 Million - Swarovski jewellery heiress

Queen Elizabeth's dress would have been work $1.6 million today - it cost $42,000 in 1947. The above are all in the white wedding dress tradition, started by Queen Victoria.  For wedding sarees, there is Isha Ambani Piramal's worth $1.08 million.

Isn't money so easy to play with?  We can compare and contrast everything based on money.  We don't have to do any real analysis or make any decisions.

I think of Cosmos as the Wedding Flower - it looks like a ball gown to me.  There's always white Cosmos in my garden.

Apr 16 2023 - Snubbed from the List

I guess if we have problems working out a wedding invitation list, then we couldn't expect the Royals to work out a Coronation invitation list.  Those who have not been invited and those who have been and have declined.  I haven't found a comprehensive list with the ins and the outs.  2,000 guests have been invited.  That is said to be slightly under the capacity of Westminster Abbey.

How many were invited to Queen Elizabeth's - - 8,000 guests attended (another article says that 5,000 attended).  There was special scaffolding set up to accommodate so many people.  That makes this coronation a much reduced version.  I wonder why that is. The report says Charles is looking to keep the palace budget as low as possible.

I would like to weigh in that this is NOT the occasion to be concerned about budget - this is a once in a life time.  I wonder if he realized that he will get crowned only once.

The dilemma of how big the royal family circle is now makes everything intense:  "What’s causing even more stress is that the invitations are being sent out in a two-stage process: a save-the-date email and then a paper invitation via snail mail. The recipients will have to acknowledge the email before they get that coveted invitation with the source calling it “a practical arrangement” for the palace. We at least know that Harry and Meghan have passed the first stage with flying colors, but it’s unknown whether they will choose to be in attendance for Charles’ big day."

How "excruciating" the wait would be in March - finding out whether one was accepted or snubbed - that moment of whether one is "truly a part of the royal family's inner circle."

Who is out?  ... Fergie did not get invited to the coronation.  Her former and disgraced husband Andrew is expected to go. Here's her story on coronation day.

"The Duchess of York previously acknowledged that she likely would not be asked to attend the event because she is no longer with her ex-husband, Prince Andrew. However, she still plans on celebrating the big day.

“I personally will be having a little tea room and coronation chicken sandwich and putting out the bunting,” she said on ITV’s “Loose Women.”

So our weeping cherry tree was blossoming yesterday in Niagara and I took Millie to the park and got a few pictures of her.  She seems to have two expressions - a grumpy accusing look straight at me, and a noble look into the distance.  She's in the blooming blue Scillas.

Oct 27 2022 - Bizarre Groom Outfits

Yesterday's headlines all focused on the bride's ugly, bizarre or inappropriate dress.  What about the groom?  articles say that two thirds of men care about their weddings, have dreams and want to be involved in planning them.  Of course, scroll down and learn why many men hate weddings.  How many mistakes do grooms always make about weddings?  One article says 50 mistakes.

We ridicule women and their choices.  We are mostly silent on men.  It was hard to find ugly groom outfit articles.  But there certainly are ugly outfits on grooms in the pictures.

Here are great examples of matched couples.  Both bride and groom in ugly outfits.   The headline, though, is about the ugliest wedding dresses.

Oh well.

So what do men think of their own wedding day? There are "weird groom" videos on TikTok.  You will have to separate out the weird dog grooms from the wedding grooms.  I have no idea what the nervous groom getting pranked video is about, but there are some great lilies in the bouquet.

At the same time, there are lots of articles about men's ugly clothing with entertaining headlines like "18 things every man should take out of his closet and burn".  And there's the I Love Ugly clothing company who create clothes for people who question everything.

I captured this wedding party a few years ago.  No ugly clothes on this dog.

Oct 26 2022 - Bizarre Wedding Dresses

One of those accumulations of crazy pictures on a theme got my attention - it was bizarre wedding dresses.  Supposedly a wedding is a ceremony where two people are "united in marriage".  And wedding traditions and customs vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups, religions, countries and social classes.

There are ideas on who does what, on how to plan a wedding, on the wedding ceremony, etiquette, and all sorts of things.  The rule of thumb from slice.ca is that the average wedding  costs around $200 a person/guest.  The proposed average cost is given at $40,000 to $50,000. The wedding planner costs on average $3,500. The venue average is $22,500.  The wedding cake is an average of $600. The average cost is $2,000.  Do you know what the average cost is of the DJ - that's that guy that plays music so loud that you can't talk to the person next to you at the dinner - $1,750.  Stunning!

Choosing a wedding dress might be the central moment for the bride.  So we want insight into hundreds of wedding dresses found on Instagram that are described with such names as:

Coccoon-inspired wedding gown
Pamela Anderson's bikini wedding dress
A real cake for a wedding gown
Pregnant bride
Nothing left to chance
Balloon wedding dress
Bride or stripper?
Mama June's hot mess
Queen of exaggeration
Cream puffs

There are more on Pinterest HERE.  Such themes are:
Top 5 sluttiest wedding dresses, Worst of all time - nearly naked, Most outrageous... Ugliest... Shocking... Bizarre...Crazy

It seems to be Imgur that has captured the moment.  Focsing on social gossip is their skill.  HERE are a few.  I rather enjoyed some of the Priceless Wedding Photos with surprise cats, dogs, and squirrels.  That's here.

Flowers that look like wedding dresses appeal to me. This is a Cosmos.

Nov 30 2021 - We Never Count the Flowers

Have you thought about flowers on cakes?  Sylvia Weinstock, famous American cake master, died at 91 this week.  Ten foot tall wedding cakes.  Baker and cake-decorator are understatements here.  Her specialty was buttercream and stencilled patterns.  Sometimes there were thousands of hand-painted sugar flowers.  The repeated quote is:  "We never count the flowers on a cake. Rather, we add, and add, and add until it pleases the eye."

The wedding cake for Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara's wedding was estimated at $50,000. That's US.  If you search for Sylvia Weinstock most famous wedding cake and look at the images, there is an amazing display of creativity and vibrant colours.   More like floral arrangements.  Who would guess a cake is beneath these flowers.

The world of extravagant wedding cakes is covered in this article HERE. There seems to be quite a few wedding cake makers who are sculptors of sugar.  She didn't make the largest wedding cake of all times.  That was chefs at Mohegan Sun Casino - 6.8 tons of cake in the US in 2004.

These all remind me of the Christmas trees at the Fantasy of Trees. The trees are like confections, pleasing the eye.

Here's Santa from a few years ago.  This year it was outside with distancing so not the best scenes.

June 2 2020 - 'Totally Fresh' Wedding Trends

Into the month of weddings. Just what are the trends for 2020?  Here are the two that stand out for me in this article on theknot.com

"Magical Mysticism...
If there’s one theme you need to know about 2020 wedding trends, this is it: mysticism is in. This spiritually charged vibe combines all the things: crystals, saging, palo santo, even aura photobooths. Don’t force this though, make it work for your unique couple style—send guests home with a rose quartz crystal, the classic stone for love, or ask your guests to pass around your wedding rings during your ceremony, imbuing them with good energy and well wishes."

"The New Amenity Basket ...
Think of this as the ultimate wedding trends #extra. Instead of treating guests to just mints and hairspray (psst, here's what else to include in a wedding bathroom basket), make their trip to the loo more memorable. Stationing tarot card readers, magicians and champagne stations just outside restrooms ensuring the party doesn’t stop, even if you leave the dance floor. "

This article is immediately followed by How to Postpone Your Wedding Due to Coronavirus. What do you think?  Cancel the crystals and aura photo booths?

Today's image is scanned Japanese Maple leaves, given an artistic touch with Topaz Impressions.

Don't be Blindsided by the Future

What a great headline this is today.  It comes from Google's top rated futurist speaker, Thomas Frey.  The query I entered was 10 unanswerable questions.

Here's how he views things.  His headline is: 10 of Life's Most Unanswerable Questions...that neither science nor religion can answer.

Here are his 10 questions:

1. Why are there exceptions to every rule? He says everything has exceptions and that exceptions matter because nothing comes with 100% predictability.
2. Why do logic  and reason fail to explain that which is true?
3. Is the universe finite or infinite?
4. Why does anything exist?
5. Why does time exist?  He quotes Albert Einstein's comment:  "The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once."
6. Why do humans matter?
7. Why are humans so fallible?
8. Do human accomplishments have long-term meaning?
9. Why is the future unknowable?
10. What is the purpose of death?

Find all the details on the 10 questions  HERE.  Then hop over to his articles on drone taxis/mini airportsmorphing mannequins20 common jobs in 2040 and so many more topics about the future.  Tom Frey's view of the future is fascinating.  He outlines the opportunities ahead with an inventor's mind.

And our pictures today?  A wedding couple at Longwood, smiling into the future.

Good Feelings

Yesterday CTV published an article on excuses for skipping royal weddings.
"You may have a genuine excuse to miss attending a wedding, but some excuses may be more unusual than others.
Disputes over honeymoon plans, unexploded bombs and elections have all been used to get guests off the hook from attending royal weddings and CTVNews.ca has rounded up some of the more memorable excuses."  Most of these relate to the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, but some go further back...

King Carl XVI Gustaf declined the 2011 wedding as it was his birthday the day after the nuptials.

Rugby stars Brian O'Driscoll and Richie McCaw both turned down 2011 invitations to prepare for the Rugby World Cup.

The Duke and Duchess of Norfolk said 'no' to attending Prince William's 2011 wedding due to the announcement of their separation nd divorce.

The King and Queen of Jordan declined due to the Arab Spring protests in their country.

The Crown Prince and Princess of Japan had an earthquake and tsunami n Tohoku in 2011.

Stephen Harper refused an invitation as the federal election was held three days after the celebration.

Feuding and snubs
Other times, political disputes can get in the way of enjoying a celebration. Such was the case for the King and Queen of Spain during Prince Charles and Diana's wedding in 1981. Disputes over the royal couple's planned honeymoon – which started with a cruise originating from Gibraltar – led to a snub from Spanish royalty. Spain claims the island of Gibraltar and politicians called the decision to visit the island "inopportune and gratuitous."
It was a similar story for the presidents of Greece, Republic of Ireland and Malta after they received their invites to Prince Charles’ first wedding. The president of Greece spurned an invite after former Greek king Constantine was invited as a friend of the royal couple.
The president of Malta gave a more personal reason when declining the invite, citing "pending issues with Britain related to World War II, unexploded bombs on the island and sunken ships in the water.”
Then-Irish president Patrick Hillery said ‘no’ to attending due to "other commitments," which sources told The Associated Press was related to two hunger-striking Irish Republican Army prisoners near death in Northern Ireland.

Our pictures today show all kinds of lilies.

Cosmos Wedding Dress

June is the month of weddings and flowers and I've taken on the challenge of creating dresses out of flowers.  This is a close-up of a white cosmos, and with the pleats and billowing lines, it seems to be right in line with the monthly theme!
