Mairlyn's Photos - Sep 5 2025 - The Canadian Globe

The Royal Geographical Society is in charge of the "Globe"  - the representation of the earth's political and geographical structures.  They don't say political, just geographical.  But I think there is an element of this given countries are drawn.

Also, there is the news that a new globe of hefty size and expense has been unveiled and the Donald trump name changes are not included. The Gulf of Mexica is the obvious one.  More notable, Canada is differentiated in colour from the U.S. This is a departure from the tradition of colouring a continent one colour.   You can see the difference in the picture below.

“It’s been designed specifically to emphasize Canada, Canada’s place in the world, and to stand out relative to its enormous, enormously powerful neighbour,” Mr. Geiger said. “I could not imagine a scenario in which Canada and the United States were the same colour.”  He's the chief of the royal Canadian Geographical Society.

Looking at the picture, you can easily see this is a big globe. It is five feet across, and was hand-made and hand-painted by British globemakers Bellerby & Co.  I think the Globe and Mail article said it came in over $120,000 and was a donation.

This is quite a celebrity moment for the Society.  I think of it as an exclusive and elite non-profit - located on Sussex Drive in Ottawa, with somewhere between 11 and 50 employees, according to Linkedin.  It has over 1,000 fellows - many recognized names in the fields it covers.

For a small organization, it does a lot - Canadian Geographic magazine, funds education, expeditions, research and lecture programs.

I looked for whether the new globe is available for us to purchase on its website shop.  Maybe that will come in time for Christmas as it isn't there yet.

Otherwise, you can purchase the poster of the biggest islands of Canada.  Look how tiny PEI is compared to its mighty presence in the cultural landscape.
