Feb 15 2024 - Snow in 27 Minutes

The weather forecast has taken to predicting changes in the weather in minutes - it said this morning snow in 27 minutes.  I await the moment as the sky darkens with clouds.  Environment Canada has warned us of a coming snowstorm.   I know that weather forecasts are much more accurate than decades ago,

Google's DeepMind and others are at the forefront of the weather forecasting revolution with AI models.

So the weather report on my smart phone gives a different forecast than the weather network on my computer.  So now I have a typical dilemma of figuring out which one is going to be the chosen authority.  Well, there's a third authority - Environment Canada and I usually vote with it.

Is that the case?  Does Environment have the most accurate forecast?  Is there a comparison that shows who won the accurate forecasting contest?  This is important as accurate weather forecasting is an input to quite a few areas:  agriculture, energy, transportation and aviation and tourism.  And then there's the impact of weather forecast accuracy - take a heat wave - a 1 degree difference is significant, particularly when it comes to heat.

Here's a number:  "In the U.S. the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issues 1.5 million forecasts per year and collects around 76 billion weather observations that help it and private companies make better forecasts."

That's a big database of information.  Too bad it isn't a popular topic on the internet.  Wouldn't we like to find out more statistics!

July 16 2022 - Quaint and Cute

Is quaint and picturesque the same?  There certainly are lots of picturesque villages in the world.  Which country does one want to go to for cute villages?

And then there's Shanghai China's "One City, Nine Towns".

The One City Nine Towns concept was an economic development plan introduced by the Shanghai Planning Commission in 2001. Each town was planned to be built in the style of a different Western city, incorporating European and North American architectural styles as a method of attracting investors and residents.  They were China, Germany, Ecology, United Kingdom, Italy, Netherlands, Canada, Sweden and Spain.  Canada's town plan was abandoned,  others are ghost towns with lots of architecture but no people anywhere.

Thames Town (U.K.) was built and is part of the Garden City. Thames Town reportedly cost £500 million and sits 19 miles outside of Shanghai.

But despite being completed in 2006, its mock-Tudor buildings, cobbled streets and English pub remain desolate and many tourists liken it to The Truman Show.

It is now used primarily by middle-class newlyweds, who choose it as the backdrop for their English-themed wedding snaps.

On entering the town you could be mistaken for thinking you had strolled into a quaint southern counties settlement.  Except that there are no people in any of the pictures.

Bronze statues of James Bond and Winston Churchill are two of the tourist attractions, while hundreds of homes are designed to imitate Victorian, Georgian and Tudor architecture.

Looking for something that you'd only find in a town?  Here's the tourist ride in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

June 10 2022 - Popsicle

Popsicle® is a registered trademark.  I didn't realize that it played a big part in the Frozen Sucker War in the 1920s and 1930s.  This was a battle between Good Humor v. Popsicle.

The origin of the Popsicle sounds so cute:

'After a long day of play Frank went inside, but left his cup of soda with the stirring stick still in it out on the porch. The night got very cold, and when Frank went outside the next morning he found his drink frozen like an icicle.

Frank called his invention the “Epsicle.” It was a hit with the kids at school, and later with his own kids who called it “Pop’s ‘sicle.” The name was catchy and the treat was delicious, so Frank patented it in 1923 to share his Popsicle® ice pops with the world!  Epperson collaborated with employees of the Loew Movie Company to form the original Popsicle Company in 1923, and sold the product to concessionaires at amusement parks and beaches.

Ice cream and frozen novelties were popping up due to advances in refrigeration.  Christian Nelson patented the Esimo Pie in January 1922. Good Humor started by Harry B. Burt also produced a chocolate-covered ice cream bar. The Good Humor truck was everywhere in American neighborhoods.

Good Humor sued Popsicle Corporation.  It looks like Popsicle suede others. More lawsuits took place. Too many lawsuit events to list here and perhaps too many to understand it all. Defending patents was a full-time activity in the 1920s. Ice cream and fruit ices had various definitions in various states.

By October 1925, Popsicle agreed to pay Good Humor a license fee to manufacture what was called frozen suckers from ice and sherbet products. Good Humor reserved the right to manufacture these products from ice cream, frozen custard, and the like.

But the Frozen dessert war continued on into the 1930s.  Popsicle put its foot into the ice milk product and that called for more law suits.  The definition of sherbet became the subject of the cases. Was it water sherbet or milk sherbet? Was the shape critical? This went on and on.

Eventually, the Frozen Sucker War came to a peaceful end. Popsicle was allowed to continue manufacturing water ices in a keystone design and later developed new forms for its creation, including the familiar double-stick Popsicle. Ironically, today both the Good Humor Bar and the Popsicle are owned and manufactured by the same company, Good Humor-Breyers Ice Cream.

Where did Frank end up in all of this?  He died at age 89 in 1983.  There seems to be nothing about him after the popsicle invention.  What did he do after he sold the patent and went on to other things?

This is all that is quoted in the NY Times obituary:

In 1925, Epperson sold the rights to the Popsicle to the Joe Lowe Company of New York. "I was flat and had to liquidate all my assets," he recalled years later. "I haven't been the same since."

There's nothing like a little clover to cheer up the day.

Nov 3 2021 - Choosing Cute vs Adorable

Is adorable and cute the same thing?  We know the cutest things: Kittens, puppies and baby penguins.  Really most baby animals are the cutest things. Are human babies next or is it stuffed animals?

Then there's adorable things - these seem to be inanimate and are things that can fulfill the  Christmas list, so how about this selection covered by Buzzfeed HERE

A desktop wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tubeman— you can learn some great moves from this guy!

Sweet striped socks ensuring you'll always have lil' friends peaking over your shoes.

Lil' sprout bookmarks to help with your growing reading list.

A pack of squishy friends you can squeeze the living daylights out of whenever you're stressed. So, always?

A matching keychain and necklace so you and your dog can show off your amazing friendship.

These are fun items - I notice that everything is from Amazon - I didn't know BuzzFeed was 'in the pocket'.  Once I look I find that they have a lot of references to Amazon - Check out some of our favorite cheap things to buy on Amazonsome of the weirdest things on Amazon you might actually want, etc.

So in the end what do we think of cute vs adorable:  "cute is possessing physical features, behaviors, personality traits or other properties that are mainly attributed to infants and small or cuddly animals; fair, dainty, round, and soft physical features, disproportionately large eyes and head, playfulness, fragility, helplessness, curiosity or shyness, innocence, affectionate behavior while adorable is befitting of being adored; cute or loveable."
