Apr 6 2023 - Really Weird Rocks

I checked into the good news network and found an article on weird floating rocks.  I seemed to have lost the original video which was very commercial yet fascinating with its pictures of precariously balanced massive stones.

The  one I looked up is the famous Japanese floating rock - it isn't actually floating, but it is an arresting sight.

"The Ishi-no-Hōden is made from tuff and is surrounded on three sides by unprocessed bedrock. With a weight estimated at 500 tons, it measures 6.4 meters wide by 5.7 meters high by 7.2 meters in thickness. In shape, it is carved in the form of two flat rectangular parallelepipeds oriented vertically and sandwiching a small rectangular parallelepiped. One of the sides has a protrusion shaped like the top of a pyramid. The space between the surrounding bedrock and the megalith is wide enough for one adult to pass through, and it is possible to go around (admission fee is required). The monolith is situated in a large depression, which forms a pond at its base. The monolith is carved with a pillar at the center of its base, which is not visible at eye-level, so the monolith appears to be floating above the pond."

Here are two of the internet pictures. This is the best-known megalith in Japan although they have numerous strange rock formations above ground and below the sea.

Mar 8 2020 - Failed Women's Day Marketing Campaigns

Perhaps Google has a 'find something different' search query so that 'news today' brings forth curious stuff.   Our headline at the top was about potholes in a town near Dayton Iowa (population 837 in 2010).  There is a picture of a Sid the Pothole Sloth posing in the pothole in Fort Dodge (population 24,305) nearby. Along with that headline, the one below was interesting as there are only  1,000 people in Dayton.  They all must know who this is:

"Dayton man charged after standing on..."
The headline completes with... "after standing on the roof of the mayor's vehicle".  It makes me wonder how a town of under a thousand could have a mayor.

Our real headline today is International Women's Day with headlines on the theme:  "I am Generation Equality:  Realizing Women's Rights. "

The Guardian had an article on corporations turning International Women's Day into a 'corporate Mother's Day'.  The example they showed was McDonald’s version of “McFeminism”, when it turned the company’s golden arches upside down to form the letter W - that was in 2018.  They then turned to Brewdog and its campaign.

In the same year, the brewer Brewdog was accused of cynical marketing after releasing a pink beer around International Women’s Day, ostensibly to raise awareness about gender pay inequality and sexist advertising.  What happened with that campaign?  It got backlash immediately. When a man attempted to purchase the discounted Pink IPA in a Brewdog pub, he was refused on the grounds that he identified as male. In order to buy it at the discount, he said he had felt forced to identify as female.  He sued the company for discrimination and won. BrewDog felt he had misused his privilege of being male so wouldn't settle privately or apologize. The settlement was 1,000 pounds in 2019.  Neither side looked good out of that campaign, particularly from the 'victim.'

You can see all of the failed brand campaigns for 2019 HERE.  At #2 position is a Miele Woman's Day Campaign that year that flopped. Let's see what happens this year.

There has to be a model railroader who is also a sculptor involved in making this train layout in Sacramento.

Doggie Day

What are the top dog stories?  We can go to rover.com and to romper.com  to get a few cute stories.   There were a few dog records in the Guinness Records for September 14th, 2019.

There are a lot of dogs and types of dogs - the Guinness Book of Records has largest, smallest, longest tail, biggest tongue, etc.  There's a lot of variation with  340 dog breeds with 192 'acknowledged' by the American Kennel Club.  This means there are quite a few dog sites.  With the google ranking of searches, it is hard to find out how many sites there are.  I thought there should be hundreds to thousands. There are 90 million dogs in the U.S.  (In total, there are over 900 million dogs in the world.)  That's a lot of market to sell to so you can imagine most sites have doggie things for sale.  Here are a few:
  • The Dog People
  • MSPCA
  • BringFido
  • Best Friends Animal Society
  • Rover
  • Muttropolis
  • BarkBox
What about BringFido - this site will help you explore 250,000 places to stay, play and eat with your dog.  Fall festivals, Oktoberfest celebrations, small towns worth visiting, and over-the-top luxury vacations.

Here is today's selection of dog jokes:

Q: What happened when the dog went to the flea circus?
A: He stole the show!

Q: Why do dogs make terrible dance partners?
A: They’ve got two left feet!

Q: What is it called when a cat wins a dog show?
A: A CAT-HAS-TROPHY!

Q: What do you call a dog with a Rolex?
A: A watch dog.

Our picture of the day shows the rocky shore on Salt Spring Island.
