June 18 2022 - Weighing In

Body weight.

This is something women think about more than men.  I expect we think about total weight, proportions and dimensions.  But I hadn't thought about how much the various body systems and parts weigh in relation to the total.

Below is a chart of the percentages of total body weight for the various sections of the body. Being in percentages, choose 200 pounds for a male  to double the percentage number, and  choose 100 pounds for a woman for the numbers to be equivalent.

And what about this view of a body.  Based on a 180 pound male, here are some numbers for body systems and organs.

1. Blood, water, and lymph system: 100 pounds
Equivalent of: filled 10-gallon aquarium

2. Bones: 21 pounds
Equivalent of: Road bike

3. Brain: 2.5 pounds
Equivalent of: Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary

4. Heart: 0.25 pounds
Equivalent of: Burger King Double Whopper

5. Other Muscles (Everything from your stomach to your biceps): 52 pounds
Equivalent of: A small boxing heavy bag

6. Carotid-Artery Walls (in the Neck): 20 milligrams
Equivalent of: Half of a staple

7. Kidneys: Half pound
Equivalent of: A small chili at Wendy's

8. Liver: 3.25 pounds
Equivalent of: Four 12-ounce cans of Budweiser

9. Lungs: 1.8 pounds
Equivalent of: A basketball and a football

10. Pancreas: 0.2 pound
Equivalent of: 28 sugar packets

11. Prostate: 18 to 20 grams, or just barely an ounce
Equivalent of: About three cherry tomatoes

12. Skin: 12 pounds
Equivalent of: The clothes you're wearing, plus heavy boots and an overcoat

13. Spinal Cord (Nerves, Not Bone): 1 ounce
Equivalent of: A short phone cord

14. Testicles: Less than 2 ounces
Equivalent of: Two squash balls

I know the human body is mostly water - up to 60%.  All parts have of water - the brain and heart are 73% water, lungs about 83%, and so on.  A water molecule is capable of performing so many functions in the human body.

On to a lovely June Day where Grimsby celebrates 100 years as a town.

June 11 2022 - I haven't been the same since

I am intrigued by Frank Epperstein's elusive statement:  "And I haven't been the same since."  It sounds sad, depleted, reduced, and melancholy.  There's no indication from the definition that this might be the case.  What is of concern with the definition is whether it is inclusive or exclusive of the time before referenced.  It is inclusive.

But somehow since has become an anthem - a marker of a catastrophic event.  There are a number of songs lyrics that include  line and substantiate the idea:

I haven't been the same since I lost my bro
I haven't been the same since I loved that hoe
Things haven't been the same since you got back from Italy
Things haven't been the same since we left (Explicit)

They all seem to extend the phrase into the realm of the "cynical absurdist".  It is the disdain rather than despair that stands out, along with the mocking quality.  Here's the sticker/t-shirt on eBay:

I haven't been the same since that house fell on my sister

I had to scroll through a lot of jokes to find some to share.  I thought there would be lots but what is there is mostly demeaning sex jokes.

Here are my chosen few:

The Supreme Court has changed dramatically since Justice Ginsberg died.
It has become Ruth less.

Ever since I became the new produce inspector I've been visiting local grocers and supermarkets; but they're always surprised to see me.
It seems nobody expects the spinach inquisition

Ever since the storm started, my husband won’t stop looking through the window.
If it gets any worse, I will have to let him in

And this one - not in the time sense of the definition, but definitely in the cynicism club:

Devil: This is the lake of lava you will be spending eternity in
Me: Actually, since we're underground, it would be magma
Devil: You understand this is why you're here, right?

May 23 2022 - How Clear is that Water?

Bing had a recent feature about one of the world's strangest rivers.  The Rio Tinto - Red River - gets its name from the reddish hue of its water, with high levels of iron and sulphur.  That's in southwestern Spain.
What about the opposite?  Where is the clearest water in the world?   The clearest water in the world is located in New Zealand - Blue Lake.  What is the visibility?  Up to 262 feet.

"Because it's considered sacred (or tapu) by the Maori locals, humans are not permitted to enter the water, so you'll be forced to either admire the clarity from the shore or check out an aerial view by booking a scenic helicopter flight."

No long flights for a while, given our travel challenges.  If we lived in Alberta, Peyto Lake is said to have the clearest water in Canada.  Surrounded by glaciers that keep the lake filled with pristine glacial water, Peyto Lake is situated near Banff, and famed for its clear, deep-blue water.

But a short flight is no better.  Let's consider travel by car - closer to home. Where is the clearest water in Ontario?  Tobermory, Elora Quarry, Topaz Lake in Sudbury, Katherine Cove in Wawa, Canatara Beach in Sarnia.  The addresses are HERE.  There are quite a few and the pictures are splendid.  Mostly they show mid to late summer swimmers.

I think it might be too cold to go swimming over the next few weeks.  I wold like to settle on Ontario's blue water views that are just like the Caribbean.  There's Lions Head Lookout, Devil's Monument Loop on the Bruce Peninsula Trail, Halfway Log Dump (what a name!) in Tobermory, along with Overhanging Point, and of course, Flower Pot Island loop.  The addresses and instructions are HERE

But we interrupt these beautiful views with a story on celebrity geese.   Go to Drake's backyard where he's seriously upset because two geese are pooping on his lawn.  He lives in the Bridle Path.  There's an article about the huge mansion and his noisy parties of up to 100 people.

"When asked what he’ll do if the neighbours complain about his huge home and the potential noise that comes along with Drake living next door, he says he’ll buy their damn house! And he’s not joking. He’s already done it in Hidden Hills".

But aren't geese protected? How do you buy out the geese?

I have a great idea. He can start up all of his cars.  The noise would drive them out:

  • Bugatti Veyron
  • Bentley Continental GTC V8
  • Brabus 850 6.0
  • Lamborghini Aventador Roadster
  • Rolls Royce Phantom
  • McLaren 675LT
  • Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.

It is Wisteria Weekend and this is the large shrub that lives around the corner.   It is very accessible and I spent some time yesterday morning taking multiple exposure shots.  The top photo is my version of May 24th Fireworks.

May 16 2022 - How Many Muscles?

That's a lot of muscles to exercise in the Muscle Fit class at the Y.  There are over 600 muscles in the human body.   So good thing I count on the Y to take care of organizing the exercise of all those muscles.

Monday is Musclefit day so got me thinking about this. Our training is very organized and divided into groups:

  • chest and back
  • quads and hamstrings
  • biceps, triceps and shoulders
  • gluten and abdominals

I don't know how many of the over 600 that includes, but it is geared to the 21st century first world non-active human.  We go to the gym to "be active".

We've figured out that each week adults need 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and 2 days of muscle strengthening activity, according to the current Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans .   Does that sound like a lot?  Sounds like the minimum to me.  That is 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week.  What do we do the rest of the time?

If you were a manual labourer would you be harming yourself by working every day?  We think of manual labourers when we think of physical work. What jobs are there that are active and pay well?  Articles point to the medical professionals such as therapists. Nurses and teachers are on their feet during the work day.  It is true that some of the most demanding jobs are hand labourers and material movers.

Did you know that the most physically demanding job is to be a dancer.  The overall physical demand index of 97.0.   And yes, there is an increase of physical hazards in hard labour work.  There are so many hazards that there is an encyclopedia of occupational diseases.

Is there a light side to this?  Always in the realm of jokes.

I pulled a muscle digging for gold.
It was just a miner injury.

What muscle group do you use the most when kidnapping someone?
The abductors.

I have great muscle memory
I totally remember when I was in shape.

The Magnolias have dropped their blooms in the heat.  This was what mine looked like on Saturday - this is likely Magnolia Susan.  Huge dark pink blossoms with this beautiful centre.

Apr 16 2022 - And Time for Canadian Easter

Is there anything distinctive about Easter in Canada similar to that distinctive way we call our Thanksgiving "Canadian Thanksgiving".

Yes, there are at least two Canadian Easter jokes that express what makes Canadian Easter Canadian.  They are below.

There is the new Pixar animation film, Turning Red, set in Toronto.  It is about a 13-year-old girl who transforms into a giant red panda when she gets too excited.  There are "easter eggs" throughout the movie/trailer.

“There are a couple of great Canadian Easter eggs in this trailer and we can't wait for Canadian audiences to see more when the film hits theatres next year,” Mason said Tuesday in a release.

HERE's the trailer.  When you find them, let me know.  I don't see anything, but find the trailer very cute.  I wish they were just easter eggs and not some special message.

There is one obvious difference between Easter in the US and Canada. We do not have mass congregations for Easter.  In the US, the President and First Lady host the White House Easter Egg Roll, a tradition dating back to 1878.  Approximately 30,000 people will take part this year.  The last time that anywhere near that many people congregated in Ottawa was in February with the Convoy Protest and we weren't at all pleased.

Today's image comes from the Niagara Falls Greenhouse lawn.  These are one of the Spring ephemerals - Chinodoxa.

Mar 20 2022 - SPRING NOW

It is spring today at 11:33am.  It is autumn today at 3:33 Australian Eastern Daylight Time. Two different experiences.  As we are in the northern hemisphere, everything relates to the spring equinox.  Stonehenge is the icon of the season change.  We have to go to Twitter to see what's happening.  The pictures are great with a beautiful sunrise and daffodils everywhere.

We in North America are less inclined towards the musical.  Our gardener's joke of the season seems proof of that.

And then the name Equinox is sprinkled far and wide, just like fairy dust.

The Chevrolet Equinox is a series of mid-size, later compact crossover SUVs from Chevrolet introduced in 2004. They are still available, and you can find them right after the solar equinox.  We could ask this question and get a car answer:  What's the difference between a Solstice and an Equinox?

More Equinox vehicles include an ATV EMS transport, an ATV Coach MPV and all kinds of industrial trailers, car tops, sports sleds and various sports things.

The Equinox Group's Luxury Fitness Club - It's not fitness, it's life. Sounds more like a vacation and the picture on the website has a young woman running through the air way up in the trees.  There are a lot of companies in the Equinox Group - 193 in total.  They hog the internet retrieval space.

I expect there's an Equinox named company in most  industries.  There's a publishing company, a cruise ship named the Celebrity Equinox.

Today is our day to celebrate Spring and the weather it promises.  Get over to twitter and watch the dancing.

May 19 2021 - Who Gassed the Bananas?

My sister bought 'ungassed bananas' last week at Freshco.  They aren't ripening.   They stay perfectly green unendingly.  They will stay that way until the end.

Most bananas and some other fruits are artificially chemically ripened using ethylene gas. Bananas naturally produce ethylene gas, which causes the fruit to ripen on its own.  It ripens bananas at the right time for the market.  It has been found not harmful or toxic to humans in the concentrations found in ripening rooms (100-150 ppm).

It was Wikipedia who answered the question of whether her green bananas will ripen on their own: Bananas can be ordered by the retailer "ungassed" (i.e. not treated with ethylene), and may show up at the supermarket fully green. They are known as Guineos verdes (green bananas).  When they have been picked green, and not been gassed, they will never fully ripen before becoming rotten.  Instead of fresh eating, these bananas are used for cooking, as is the case in Jamaican cuisine. So ungassed bananas aren't about 'organic' but about being a cooking ingredient.

Ethylene gas is all about f
ruits, such as tomato, banana, and pear. They can be harvested just before ripening has started (typically in a hard, green, but mature stage). This is a precise stage and it allows time for the fruit to be stored and transported to distant places.

We too can 'administer' ethylene gas at home to trick the plant into ripening its fruits and vegetables earlier. We do this by placing the fruit or vegetable inside a paper bag. This is typically done with tomatoes in the autumn.  It will concentrate the ethylene gas inside the bag, causing the fruit to ripen. Do not use a plastic bag, which can trap moisture, causing the fruit to rot.  And you do need to pick it when it is mature and not before then.  There are lots of ways to ripen green tomatoes off the vine.  Check them out HERE.

As for green bananas, cook them like potatoes - boiled, french fried, mashed, latkes.  To boil, cut the ends off, and lower the bananas with peel into the water for 15 - 20 minutes of boiling until skin and water darkens and bananas are tender.

Florida Dogwoods are blooming - those white blossoms floating in the trees with barely the hint off the leaves on the branches.  This second picture is on Yates Street, St. Catharines.
