Apr 15 2025 - Guessing Your Weight

It used to be that when the Carnival/Circus came to town, there would be someone who would call people up and guess their weight.  Then they would stand on the weight scale and he'd usually be right. If he was wrong, they got a prize.  I remember the carnival came to the parking lot/field of  the Fairview Mall in St. Catharines.  And the picture below, from 1939 is on Welland Avenue at George Street - that's near where Brian's office was in downtown St. Catharines. That article says the Pen Centre and Lincoln Mall parking lots were regular locations.

A novel item in the article was that Mayor Joseph Reid rode the elephants before the 1976 circus.  Got me on that one.  Circuses discontinued  in the 2000s with animal rights concerns. Finally.

So we need one of those Carnie guys now to tell us what Donald Trump really weighs.  There's lots of discussion on it - or rather, his height and weight spark debate. This has been under debate for a long time.   Not just the latest medical results.

Arnold Schwarzenegger in October 2023 had an opinion.

Asking Schwarzenegger to clarify, Kimmel pressed, “So you think that it’s possible he weighs 215 pounds?”

“Yes, as much as it is possible that there is no climate change,” the former bodybuilder quipped. “And as much as it’s possible that we don’t need to reduce pollution.”

“Look, we all know the way he is, and if it makes him feel good to tell everyone he weighs 215, I think everyone laughs about it because he does not look like he weighs 215,” he went on. “He’s a little more like 315.”

He's the only one quoted so far.  No one else seems to want to "weigh in."

Isn't that interesting, given every carnival came with a person who would guess your weight.  There must be lots of experts out there.  Everything is going quiet on the Trumpian front.

June 18 2022 - Weighing In

Body weight.

This is something women think about more than men.  I expect we think about total weight, proportions and dimensions.  But I hadn't thought about how much the various body systems and parts weigh in relation to the total.

Below is a chart of the percentages of total body weight for the various sections of the body. Being in percentages, choose 200 pounds for a male  to double the percentage number, and  choose 100 pounds for a woman for the numbers to be equivalent.

And what about this view of a body.  Based on a 180 pound male, here are some numbers for body systems and organs.

1. Blood, water, and lymph system: 100 pounds
Equivalent of: filled 10-gallon aquarium

2. Bones: 21 pounds
Equivalent of: Road bike

3. Brain: 2.5 pounds
Equivalent of: Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary

4. Heart: 0.25 pounds
Equivalent of: Burger King Double Whopper

5. Other Muscles (Everything from your stomach to your biceps): 52 pounds
Equivalent of: A small boxing heavy bag

6. Carotid-Artery Walls (in the Neck): 20 milligrams
Equivalent of: Half of a staple

7. Kidneys: Half pound
Equivalent of: A small chili at Wendy's

8. Liver: 3.25 pounds
Equivalent of: Four 12-ounce cans of Budweiser

9. Lungs: 1.8 pounds
Equivalent of: A basketball and a football

10. Pancreas: 0.2 pound
Equivalent of: 28 sugar packets

11. Prostate: 18 to 20 grams, or just barely an ounce
Equivalent of: About three cherry tomatoes

12. Skin: 12 pounds
Equivalent of: The clothes you're wearing, plus heavy boots and an overcoat

13. Spinal Cord (Nerves, Not Bone): 1 ounce
Equivalent of: A short phone cord

14. Testicles: Less than 2 ounces
Equivalent of: Two squash balls

I know the human body is mostly water - up to 60%.  All parts have of water - the brain and heart are 73% water, lungs about 83%, and so on.  A water molecule is capable of performing so many functions in the human body.

On to a lovely June Day where Grimsby celebrates 100 years as a town.

Oct 30 2021 - Adele Before and After

Adele is releasing a new album  - titled 30.  Her last was in 2015 and was titled 25.  Her album 21 became the world's biggest-selling album of the 21st century.  To say she's a leading artist with many awards is a factual understatement. She's the composer of Skyfall, the James Bond film music.

But what is the big story that everyone wants to talk about?   Her weight loss which got noticeable in 2019.   It is significant - 100 lbs over two years.

Health experts are 'wading in' over her diet and exercise regime.  This gets them lots of attention.  The Daily Mail in the UK is representative of the kinds of coverage she's gotten:

"Why does Adele's face look SO different following her weight loss? Expert reveals how slimming makes the skin lose volume and the eyes and nose become more prominent
  • Exclusive: Aeshetic expert  revealed how Adele's reported seven stone weight changed her face by allowing her features to become more prominent
  • Leading aesthetics trainer Dr Chike said the loss of volume affects your features
  • Dietician Kate Llewellyn-Waters explained her retained glow could be a result of a nutrient dense diet packed with antioxidants, high in anti-inflammatory foods
  • Adele reportedly lost seven stone on the 'green juice and 1000 calories-a-day"

"Adele has lost the roundness around the cheeks and the jaw line, her features are more sharp and angular - charactersitic signs of a loss of facial volume and fat.

Her crow's feet have become more pronounced and her nasolabial folds have become deeper - these are all the signs of major weight loss. "

Vogue's coverage has a self-help theme:  Adele's 7 weight loss secrets uncovered as she reveals truth behind her transformation. I appreciate the last one:  ignore the critics.

You can find lots of lots of pictures of her both ways - she's extremely photogenic with a kind of glow.

Here are the two Finalists in the Betterphoto contest for September.  We'll see if they get any further.  The winners get announced the last day of the month.

Dogs and Children

I got to wondering how dogs compare to children in size and weight.  I guess there are dogs that compare to adults as well - think of a male Bullmastiff at a 110 to 130 pounds.  That weight would be a female human adult at five feet four inches.  Chihuahuas weigh around 6 pounds, so that would be a newborn baby girl (of low weight as newborn weight starts at 7 lbs) and almost 20 inches tall. The average Golden Retriever is 70 lbs so that translates to a 10 year old boy.

Whatever a dog's size, they are willing partners for an outdoor walk in the woods.  We can't be sure what a 10 year old boy would want to do this Saturday.

Where will we go to get the best Fall colour experience? The ontarioparks.com website has a Fall Colour Map HERE

You can go to Algonquin Park right now and see good colour due to cool temperatures over the last few days.  The information includes the report date, dominant colour, colour change and best viewing.  Colour change looks like a percentage colour and percentage leaf fall.  So in Algonquin right now the colour change is 50% and leaf fall 10%.

There were no Niagara parks included in the report. So I checked out the Fall Colour Progression Report from this SITE.  The colour change in Niagara is 0%.  Included is Beamer Conservation Area - that's Grimsby's park on the escarpment.  Also covered are Brock's Monument, Ball's Falls and Niagara Falls.  Burlington's Royal Botanical Gardens has its own entry with 0% change.  So we're not yet into the Fall colours here in Niagara.

So we'll use the colours of pumpkins for our Fall image today.  This is Hildreth's on Greenlane, a fruit and vegetable stand.
